Everyone has their own way of categorizing things they like (and don’t like.) Here’s my rating system for books:
BBE- This stands for “Best Book Ever.” This is the best book I’ve ever read … until I read the next book that bumps it out of place. I always have a current BBE book, and have dozens over time. (The first book that I can recall in this category was Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. This book held the coveted slot for many years, and it was read to me a thousand times. Once I ventured into chapter books, it was supplanted by Mrs. Pigglewiggle’s Magic, which was quickly replaced by The Boxcar Children.) I’m going to stop, as you get the picture, and my BBE books could fill their own page. The point is, I loved them; I read them over and over, and I still think about them today.
Awesome – This overused term is one of my favorites, and it represents books that just fall short of BBE status. These are “you should definitely read this” books. In fact, you should put down whatever you’re reading now and pick one of these up.
Good – I liked these books. They kept me interested, made me laugh, cry or think hard.
Okay – These books are just that. Okay. You’ll enjoy them while you read them, and then you’ll forget them.
Hmmm. – This is my lowest category for books that I’ve actually read cover-to-cover. I finished the book, which means I didn’t think it was awful, but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone else. There are books that I think are below this category, but I have trouble finishing books I don’t like, so this is as low as I go.
