“Breaking Dawn” sucks

I’m always “tsk, tsking” my teenagers for using “sucks” slang. But, try Googling “Breaking Dawn sucks.” On Yahoo, Fanfiction, Blogher, Facebook, YouTube … EVERYWHERE … people are saying just that about Breaking Dawn, the final book in Stephenie Meyer’s vampire/werewolf series. I suppose, given the vampire theme (and the quality of the book), it’s appropriate.

Exactly one week ago the book world was in an anticipative uproar over the book’s release. There were release parties, Internet spoilers, exaustive (and exhausting) chat about the fate of Bella, Jacob, and Edward.  Today, the same folks are again in an uproar. This time, however, it’s not so festive. Meyer’s fans are not happy. Seering reviews abound. The LA Times, Publisher’s Weekly, Jezebel, and Entertainment Weekly have all trashed the book. Some former Meyer fans are so upset they are telling others, “Don’t Burn it, RETURN it!

Personally, I’m a bit relieved by the negative response. I questioned the messages in the earlier books, and have been nattering at my coworkers about it for weeks. I’m very interested in how this plays out, so stay tuned.

More: My earlier search missed author Alisa Valdes-Rodriquez’s take on the book.

  • Marcia,

Thanks for the link to Alisa Valdes-Rodriquez’s comments. I’ve been trying to get through Breaking Dawn this week and I’m having a tough time. Couldn’t finish the last one either.

  • Hi Marcia!

While the series may not have been my cup of tea, I think an author’s job is to tell a story, not to send a message. I think that holds true for YA authors in the same way it does for authors of adult books. Every teen will read the book in their own unique way. I have enormous respect for the intelligence of teen readers. I also believe that most people, including teens, read for a variety of reasons, and one of those is escape, especially in the summer or in the middle of an intense course load.

  • breaking dawn sucks

  • yeah… this book was… painful.
